Mohammed N. Islam, Ph.D.

Omni Sciences Inc. was founded by Dr. Islam, who currently serves as its Chief Technology Officer. He received the B.S. degree in 1981, the M.S. degree in 1983, and the Sc.D. degree in 1985, all electrical engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. From 1985-1992 he was a member of the Technical Staff in the Advanced Photonics Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories. He joined the EECS department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1992, where he is currently a full tenured professor.

In 1992, Dr. Islam was awarded the OSA Adolf Lomb Medal for pioneering contributions to nonlinear optical phenomena and all-optical switching in optical fibers. In 1998, he became a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, in In 2002 received the Texas eComm Ten Award for being one of the 10 most influential people in Texas’s digital economy, and in In 2004 became a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Dr. Islam has published over 110 papers in refereed journals and holds over 115 patents or patents pending. His current research interests include mid-infrared laser sources and their applications in advanced semiconductor process control, combustion monitoring, telecommnications, infrared counter-measures, chemical sensing and bio-medical selective laser ablation. He also has on-going work in modulators and new architectures for fiber to the home systems. These research efforts have led to Dr. Islam's founding several spin-off companies, including Xtera Communications, Celeste Optics, AccuPhotonics, Cheetah Omni LLC and Omni Sciences, Inc.

Gerald P. Roston, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Roston currently serves as the General Manager for Omni Sciences. He started his career as a systems engineer for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he was one of the original members of the Mars Rover team. Since having earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon in the field of Robotics, he has held managerial positions with several businesses, ranging from a Dot-Com start-up to General Electric, in a variety fo sectors, including IT, biotechnology, transportation and manufacturing. Dr. Roston has written scores of proposals, served as Principal Investigator on numerous projects, has more than two dozen publications and four patents. Dr. Roston's is recognized as an accomplished leader for technology-focused start-up businesses

In addition to his role with Omni Sciences, Dr. Roston is active with a number of small business advocacy groups. He is a Panel Member on the NIH Clinical Neurosciences and Brain Disorders Initial Study Group, a Board Member and officer of the New Enterprise Forum, and a founding Board Member and officer of the Michigan Hi-Tech CEO Alliance.
