OSI has an immediate opening for an outstanding Optical Engineer with exceptional drive, ability, creativity, and vision to help us bring this product to market. Primary job responsibilities will be focused on assembling, testing, and analyzing MIRFIL devices. Specific areas of responsibility include:

  • Perform optical testing
    • Knowledge of laser safety including handling high power lasers
    • EDFA spectral characterization using an Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA)
    • Mid-IR spectral measurement using a spectrometer
    • Temporal testing using a fast detector and oscilloscope
    • Power meter operation
    • White light component evaluation
  • Assemble optical components
    • Fiber fusion splicing
    • Fiber routing and management
    • Mechanical splice or connection from fused silica fiber to ZBLAN fiber, possibly requiring precision alignment of the fiber ends
    • Mid-IR output beam collimation and alignment using reflective optics
  • Design and test electronic PCB mounting and interconnections
    • Packaging and mounting for thermal management
    • Parameter adjustment and test laser drive currents, interlock levels, TEC operating temperatures, etc.
    • ESD safe handling of PCBs and devices
  • Design product packaging:
    • Knowledge of relevant government safety and labeling requirements
    • Packaging must support and enhance device reliability and serviceability and must satisfy challenging space, power and thermal requirements
  • Perform environmental testing
    • Temperature, Humidity, Vibration

Requirements for this position include:

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical or Optical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of three years of relevant hands-on or laboratory experience (preferably post-baccalaureate)
  • Demonstrated experience with fiber optic fusion splicing, electronics PCB handling, etc
  • Demonstrated experience with laboratory test equipment, including digital storage scopes, data acquisition equipment, etc.
  • Excellent trouble-shooting skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of computer software applications, such as MS Office, NI LabView, 3D CAD, etc
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

In addition, experience with one or more of the following is desirable:

  • Laser safety
  • Manufacturing, Product packaging and labeling
  • High power CW laser diodes
  • Mechanical packaging design
  • Mid-Infrared, light generation, optical system design, and detection
