Omni Sciences is developing the most cost-effective and robust mid-infrared, super-continuum fiber lasers in the world. The significance of this technology was described in the December 2006 issue of Scientific American, in an article entitled "The Ultimate White Light". OSI's Mid-Infra-Red FIber Laser (MIRFIL) will generate continuous light over the mid-IR, 2-5 microns, with time-averaged power greater than 5W. The MIRFIL is a practical super-continuum source that uses commercial off-the-shelf laser diodes and fibers, i.e., no optical bench, that covers several octaves of mid-IR spectrum. This super-continuum source is unique in that a mode-locked laser is not required and only short fiber lengths are used. The spectral density is more than eight orders-of-magnitude brighter than a peak lamp power.
